Dictée This week marks the first of our weekly dictées. Dictée will happen every Friday right after lunch during our language block of the day and will focus on words containing the sound of the week. Dictée in Salle 300 focuses on two things: correctly identifying and spelling the sound of the week and listening to the word and writing the rest phonetically. basically if I can tell what the word is, it will be marked as right. For example, if the word is HIBOU, I'm looking for students to identify the OU sound at the end of the word, and to sound out the rest themselves. If they write IBOU, it will be marked as correct. This method allows students to begin to write without fear of failure. It eliminates the barrier for them and helps to create independence in writing. Practicing at home through various methods (writing down, typing, drawing word in air, on a parent/sibling's back etc. is a great way to build confidence. Here are the words for this week: Our sound of the week is OU and the words are... Hibou Tout Partout Boue Mouche Douche Rouler Curriculum Night Curriculum night is Next Thursday in the classroom starting with a BBQ in the school yard. Please return the forms as soon as possible to get your food orders in. If there is anything specifically that you are interested in hearing about during curriculum night, please let me know by completing this form. A reminder that curriculum night is about getting to know classroom routines, expectations and content and not about how each child is doing. If you would like to know specific information about your child, please feel free to e-mail me to set up an in-person or phone meeting, or alternatively I'm happy to answer any questions you might have via email. Hello and welcome back! To the families that were in room 300 last year, I am so excited to continue our learning journey together. To those new to 300, I can't wait to get to know you and your child better, and welcome any questions you may have. I hope everyone had a fun, relaxing, family-filled summer. I am very excited to be back and to begin a new year of learning together. As mentioned above, I will be using this website as well as email updates to provide important information. Please bookmark this page so that you can refer back often. I will update the website every Monday with new information including our learning goals and focus for the week.
Some housekeeping items for the first week of school: Immersion in the class - This year in room 300 we are implementing a French-only environment. Students will be encouraged to challenge themselves to speak in French at all times. The language acquisition that comes from this is tremendous and invaluable for them to see the utility of having a second (or third, or fourth etc.) language. This will definitely come with some growing pains as they become more comfortable and confident interacting with myself and their peers in French. They will be encouraged and supported to use resources available to them to find the words in French and also to describe something a different way if they can't remember the word. With time and patience it really is truly remarkable the progress your child will make not only with their oral language, but also with their abilities in reading and writing. All good things take time. Homework - Homework this year will be slightly different than last year in regards to homework. I will provide you with more information on this shortly! Indoor Shoes - Please make sure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes that they can participate in for Phys Ed, and also wear during the day. All students MUST change into their indoor shoes every day and is an indicator of their readiness and preparedness not only in PE class, but also in room 300. Lunches - As a school, we are aiming to reach gold level again as an eco school. This involves a number of initiatives, including maintaining our litter-less lunch rule from last year. Please make sure that everything in lunch boxes can be reused at home. STEM Centre - Speaking of reusing... (this is very obviously a theme and focus for this year :) ). Last year we had a small STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) centre where children were encouraged to use various materials to design and build a number of things. That being said, I am always on the lookout for clean, recyclable containers (yogurt, k-cups etc.) that could be used as environmentally-friendly building blocks to challenge and expand their curious minds. |
