Weekly Focus
PUMPKINS! If you haven't already heard, we've started our inquiry on pumpkins. This investigation will blend into all subject areas so we'll be taking a small break from our regular programming to explore things that come up. Math - Predicting , measuring with standard and non-standard units, learning about height, weight, mass, volume, circumference. Language - Continuing narratives with Salle 301. Connecting our science investigation with writing, and writing about WHY and HOW a pumpkin floats. OI sound this week Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. Voici 2. Froid 3. Froide 4. Histoire 5. Voir 6. Voilà 7. Voix Science - Properties of liquids and solids. Seeing their faces when they discovered that pumpkins floated was priceless. We're now going to figure out why by trying to replicate our own versions of a pumpkin using plasticine until it floats. Questions to ask - Why do you think a pumpkin floats? Was that surprising to you? Why or why not? - What was the most interesting part of this week? - Did you like getting a chance to be hands on with pumpkins this week? - What's your story with your friend from room 301 about? Progress Report Cards will be coming home in a few weeks. Please keep your eye out for an email this week to set up interview times.

Firstly, I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has brought a pumpkin in. Our pumpkin inquiry week was a class favourite last year and we're looking forward to investigating again this year.
***Library Books - please make sure that if your child brought a library book home, that it has bee returned! Books will be coming home again once M. Quan in the library receives the take-home book bags. Weekly Focus Math - Data collection, sorting, organizing and creation of simple bar graphs and tally charts. Language - In writing we are working on narratives. We're writing a story with partners from Salle 301, inspired by our Safe and Caring schools book for the month, Stepping Stones. OI sound this week Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. roi 2. oiseau 3. croix 4. moi 5. noir 6. oies 7. pourquoi The class is doing extremely well with dictées and so this indicates to me that it's time to bump things up. Look out for a more challenging dictée in weeks to come. Students are doing very well learning phonetic sound blends and applying this to their writing. Writing skills have already come a long way since September and I am encouraging students to see the growth they have made in this department. Science - States of Matter - Experiments are coming up this week including one with JELLO tomorrow. Questions to ask - What did you learn about in the JELLO experiment? - Do you think your French has progressed since the beginning of September (the answer for everyone is YES! Their oral French is coming along! - Make a graph together by sorting information about various topics It was great having so many special people in class this morning. I hope it gave you a little insight as to what goes on in the class on a daily basis. That is one of the games we love to play in math. Essentially it's a math Easter Egg hunt and the movement between hidden questions helps keeps the kids engaged and also helps to keep their brains firing. Feel free to adapt to play at home, so far the class is really enjoying days where we do our math this way.
In a couple of weeks we will be doing a big inquiry week on pumpkins. If you would like to donate a pumpkin to the class or participate in any way, please let me know! Weekly Focus Math - Finishing up our unit on patterning for now and we are beginning to focus on data management. We will be collecting data and learning about simple bar graphs this week. Language - Continuing strategies for decoding while reading. We are focusing specifically on asking for help when we get to a word we don't know, and also sounding it out syllable by syllable. ON sound again Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. Chaton 2. On est 3. Bon 4. Poisson 5. Mon 6. Caméléon 7. Simon Social Studies - Finishing up our studies on celebrations and traditions (still!) Science - States of Matter - the focus for this week is learning about the differences between liquids, gases and solids. We will be starting some science experiments next week - hopefully those get your children talking! Questions to ask - Ask them about what kind of questions they asked in class to collect data on their peers - Ask them what a "graphique à barres" looks like - Ask them about their "Merci" and "Désolé" minibooks. Which was harder for them, saying thank you, or saying sorry? Weekly Focus
Math - Patterning: Identification of rules and regularities in patterns. Creating and extending number patterns and learning how to read/answer questions in our math journals. Language - Continuing strategies for decoding while reading. ON sound Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. bonbon 2. mouton 3. onze 4. maison 5. façon 6. pardon 7. non Social Studies - Finishing up our studies on celebrations and traditions for now. Questions to ask Curriculum night got me thinking about how I can help you support your child at home. Many of you mentioned that your child doesn't talk specifically about what we are up to in class so here are some things that we are working on this week that you can ask your child about: - Ask them about their celebration/traditions mini-book - Ask them about their story about "le mouton et les bonbons" - Ask them about finding patterns in numbers (eg. 3, 6, 9, __, 15, 18 - find the missing number). Did they enjoy it? Did they find it easy? Hard? What strategies did they use? Homework Some students have asked for some extra work for home. If a student asks for that extra work, I am happy to help nurture that joy for learning. If you see some homework start to come home, it's because your child has taken the initiative to ask for some! Blue Jays Very last minute (like the Jays getting into the Wildcard spot), but if you get this update on time, we are going to be wearing blue tomorrow (Tuesday) to support the Jays in their wildcard game tomorrow night! Class Schedule I will be updating our specific class schedule later this week in the calendar section of the website. This will be what we do almost all day 1s, 2s, etc., but is subject to change as things come up. Thank you for this suggestion! |
