Salle 300
Welcome to our website! In an effort to save trees and lessen our footprint, this is where families can access our calendar, weekly focus, monthly newsletter and special events.
Firstly, I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has brought a pumpkin in. Our pumpkin inquiry week was a class favourite last year and we're looking forward to investigating again this year.
***Library Books - please make sure that if your child brought a library book home, that it has bee returned! Books will be coming home again once M. Quan in the library receives the take-home book bags. Weekly Focus Math - Data collection, sorting, organizing and creation of simple bar graphs and tally charts. Language - In writing we are working on narratives. We're writing a story with partners from Salle 301, inspired by our Safe and Caring schools book for the month, Stepping Stones. OI sound this week Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. roi 2. oiseau 3. croix 4. moi 5. noir 6. oies 7. pourquoi The class is doing extremely well with dictées and so this indicates to me that it's time to bump things up. Look out for a more challenging dictée in weeks to come. Students are doing very well learning phonetic sound blends and applying this to their writing. Writing skills have already come a long way since September and I am encouraging students to see the growth they have made in this department. Science - States of Matter - Experiments are coming up this week including one with JELLO tomorrow. Questions to ask - What did you learn about in the JELLO experiment? - Do you think your French has progressed since the beginning of September (the answer for everyone is YES! Their oral French is coming along! - Make a graph together by sorting information about various topics

It was great having so many special people in class this morning. I hope it gave you a little insight as to what goes on in the class on a daily basis. That is one of the games we love to play in math. Essentially it's a math Easter Egg hunt and the movement between hidden questions helps keeps the kids engaged and also helps to keep their brains firing. Feel free to adapt to play at home, so far the class is really enjoying days where we do our math this way.
In a couple of weeks we will be doing a big inquiry week on pumpkins. If you would like to donate a pumpkin to the class or participate in any way, please let me know! Weekly Focus Math - Finishing up our unit on patterning for now and we are beginning to focus on data management. We will be collecting data and learning about simple bar graphs this week. Language - Continuing strategies for decoding while reading. We are focusing specifically on asking for help when we get to a word we don't know, and also sounding it out syllable by syllable. ON sound again Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. Chaton 2. On est 3. Bon 4. Poisson 5. Mon 6. Caméléon 7. Simon Social Studies - Finishing up our studies on celebrations and traditions (still!) Science - States of Matter - the focus for this week is learning about the differences between liquids, gases and solids. We will be starting some science experiments next week - hopefully those get your children talking! Questions to ask - Ask them about what kind of questions they asked in class to collect data on their peers - Ask them what a "graphique à barres" looks like - Ask them about their "Merci" and "Désolé" minibooks. Which was harder for them, saying thank you, or saying sorry? Weekly Focus
Math - Patterning: Identification of rules and regularities in patterns. Creating and extending number patterns and learning how to read/answer questions in our math journals. Language - Continuing strategies for decoding while reading. ON sound Dictée words that have been chosen by the class: 1. bonbon 2. mouton 3. onze 4. maison 5. façon 6. pardon 7. non Social Studies - Finishing up our studies on celebrations and traditions for now. Questions to ask Curriculum night got me thinking about how I can help you support your child at home. Many of you mentioned that your child doesn't talk specifically about what we are up to in class so here are some things that we are working on this week that you can ask your child about: - Ask them about their celebration/traditions mini-book - Ask them about their story about "le mouton et les bonbons" - Ask them about finding patterns in numbers (eg. 3, 6, 9, __, 15, 18 - find the missing number). Did they enjoy it? Did they find it easy? Hard? What strategies did they use? Homework Some students have asked for some extra work for home. If a student asks for that extra work, I am happy to help nurture that joy for learning. If you see some homework start to come home, it's because your child has taken the initiative to ask for some! Blue Jays Very last minute (like the Jays getting into the Wildcard spot), but if you get this update on time, we are going to be wearing blue tomorrow (Tuesday) to support the Jays in their wildcard game tomorrow night! Class Schedule I will be updating our specific class schedule later this week in the calendar section of the website. This will be what we do almost all day 1s, 2s, etc., but is subject to change as things come up. Thank you for this suggestion! Weekly Focus:
Math - Patterning: Identification of rules and regularities in patterns. Creating and explaining patterns with multiple attributes. Language - Strategies for decoding while reading. OU sound Dictée words are chosen by the class and the importance again is to be able to sound them out to spell, not to memorize. That is why you see the word "hou" this week as it is a part of our weekly poem as the noise the owl makes. hou mouton kangourou grenouille nouille boule moufette Social Studies - Family, celebrations and traditions. First project for the year will be introduced this week and focus on this topic - more to come during curriculum night. Curriculum Night I'm looking forward to seeing many familiar and new faces on Thursday night. If you are unable to attend but would like a copy of my presentation please let me know and I will share it with you. Terry Fox Run The Terry Fox Run will be taking place on Wednesday in the school yard. Please make sure that your child dresses appropriately to participate in the run. Money is being collected this year online (as much as possible). For more information on this, please check your school newsletter from last week. Orange Shirt Day On Friday we will be participating in Orange Shirt Day where students across Canada wear orange shirts in recognition and acknowledgement of Aboriginal people's experiences with residential schools, honouring those who survived, and remembering those who did not. Indoor Shoes Please make sure that your children are bringing them! Dictée This week marks the first of our weekly dictées. Dictée will happen every Friday right after lunch during our language block of the day and will focus on words containing the sound of the week. Dictée in Salle 300 focuses on two things: correctly identifying and spelling the sound of the week and listening to the word and writing the rest phonetically. basically if I can tell what the word is, it will be marked as right. For example, if the word is HIBOU, I'm looking for students to identify the OU sound at the end of the word, and to sound out the rest themselves. If they write IBOU, it will be marked as correct. This method allows students to begin to write without fear of failure. It eliminates the barrier for them and helps to create independence in writing. Practicing at home through various methods (writing down, typing, drawing word in air, on a parent/sibling's back etc. is a great way to build confidence. Here are the words for this week: Our sound of the week is OU and the words are... Hibou Tout Partout Boue Mouche Douche Rouler Curriculum Night Curriculum night is Next Thursday in the classroom starting with a BBQ in the school yard. Please return the forms as soon as possible to get your food orders in. If there is anything specifically that you are interested in hearing about during curriculum night, please let me know by completing this form. A reminder that curriculum night is about getting to know classroom routines, expectations and content and not about how each child is doing. If you would like to know specific information about your child, please feel free to e-mail me to set up an in-person or phone meeting, or alternatively I'm happy to answer any questions you might have via email. Hello and welcome back! To the families that were in room 300 last year, I am so excited to continue our learning journey together. To those new to 300, I can't wait to get to know you and your child better, and welcome any questions you may have. I hope everyone had a fun, relaxing, family-filled summer. I am very excited to be back and to begin a new year of learning together. As mentioned above, I will be using this website as well as email updates to provide important information. Please bookmark this page so that you can refer back often. I will update the website every Monday with new information including our learning goals and focus for the week.
Some housekeeping items for the first week of school: Immersion in the class - This year in room 300 we are implementing a French-only environment. Students will be encouraged to challenge themselves to speak in French at all times. The language acquisition that comes from this is tremendous and invaluable for them to see the utility of having a second (or third, or fourth etc.) language. This will definitely come with some growing pains as they become more comfortable and confident interacting with myself and their peers in French. They will be encouraged and supported to use resources available to them to find the words in French and also to describe something a different way if they can't remember the word. With time and patience it really is truly remarkable the progress your child will make not only with their oral language, but also with their abilities in reading and writing. All good things take time. Homework - Homework this year will be slightly different than last year in regards to homework. I will provide you with more information on this shortly! Indoor Shoes - Please make sure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes that they can participate in for Phys Ed, and also wear during the day. All students MUST change into their indoor shoes every day and is an indicator of their readiness and preparedness not only in PE class, but also in room 300. Lunches - As a school, we are aiming to reach gold level again as an eco school. This involves a number of initiatives, including maintaining our litter-less lunch rule from last year. Please make sure that everything in lunch boxes can be reused at home. STEM Centre - Speaking of reusing... (this is very obviously a theme and focus for this year :) ). Last year we had a small STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) centre where children were encouraged to use various materials to design and build a number of things. That being said, I am always on the lookout for clean, recyclable containers (yogurt, k-cups etc.) that could be used as environmentally-friendly building blocks to challenge and expand their curious minds. |
